Hi everyone, Grace here. Today I want to share my thoughts on the positive impact that group therapy had in my life, before my becoming a therapist. 

I have been wanting to write a blog on this topic for the longest time! Prior to my transition, I had little to no experience with group therapy. I had done individual therapy, but I never really had an opportunity to engage in the group process. When I began my transition, I found it to be profoundly isolating, and my need to create support structures became essential. The process of coming out to myself and others was anxiety-invoking. There were times when I felt completely and utterly alone.

My therapist at the time had been running groups for trans women for decades. One day, she suggested I join her group, which met in-person on Sundays. I had no idea what to expect. I had a notion in my head about what the people in the group would be like. I imagined they would all be fabulous, put-together women—reflections of the woman I hoped to become. The truth of the matter was that everyone in the group was at various stages of their transition. Some folks, like myself, were just coming to terms with their Transgender identity. Some had come out years before, but were hoping to find community and gain further insight into their own Trans experience. 

Over time, we truly bonded with one another. The group became a refuge for me to be heard, seen, respected and validated. It was a space where I could share my fears and desires, and listen to others’ fears and desires, which oftentimes reflected my own. It was a place for me to go once a month, and feel a sense of community. And the best part? Going out for lunch or a coffee after the group with other group members! 

Transitioning can be grueling, but presenting publicly with others who were doing the same relieved my anxieties immensely. My life was deeply changed from that little group and the family that we created. 

My wish is for every Trans and Nonbinary person to have their own impactful experience with group therapy. I am looking forward to hosting a group of my own for Trans and Nonbinary folks, only this time I will be the therapist! (Make sure to keep an eye out for the announcement!) I look forward to creating a group that empowers gender-diverse folks to share their thoughts and feelings, find meaning and purpose, and feel a deep sense of kinship and community.
