Let them play has just taken on an entirely new meaning… The New York Times pronounced in a recent article that “transgender and nonbinary people said in interviews that video games were one of the safest spaces to explore their queer identities.”

Though parents tend to feel worrisome when kids engage in long hours of gaming, “professionals have said in recent years that video games can be a form of gender-affirming care.” Allow us to explain…

GWLA President, Casey Weitzman, M.A., LMFT states that many of her clients admit that video games are the first spaces they are able to experience the gender they were meant to be. Casey suggests an alternative narrative that might come as a shock: instead of criticizing your child’s time spent online, engage with them. “Sometimes I ask them to share their screen, show the games they play and the characters they love. There is value. Pay attention to the games they play, because it can actually be very social.”

In conclusion, it’s evident that “games that allow players to express their gender identities without pushback help those transitioning become more comfortable in the real world.” (New York Times). Because not all kids feel safe coming out at school, or to their friends or family, online gaming provides a unique environment where trans folks of all ages can come together and be “seen” as who they are.
