Talking Transgender Hair Removal with Electrologist, Alana Dzurek
“…LIKE AN ENORMOUS EMOTIONAL BURDEN HAS BEEN LIFTED.”
Alana Dzurek, the Founder and CEO of Beverly Hills Hair Free is a Licensed Electrologist with over 20+ years of experience. An expert in her field, Alana is a contributor to HairFreeLife.com and instructor and lecturer at the American Institute of Education, the leading Southern California Electrology school. Gender Wellness of Los Angeles (GWLA) has been referring our Male to Female (MtF) and Female To Male (FtM) clients in transition to her salon and their treatment has received rave reviews. So, we thought we’d talk with Alana to learn a little bit more about her and her practice.
What makes your approach different from traditional electrolysis?
Traditional Electrolysis uses one needle at a time, and most electrologists use thermolysis (heat similar to the laser), which results in tremendous re-growth. We use Galvanic electrolysis (our method creates Lye inside the follicle) limiting the re-growth rate up to 70% less than thermolysis. We also use a proprietary system that utilizes 16 to 32 needles simultaneously, the advantage with our system is that patients can tolerate longer treatments, with less frequent visits.
How did you start working with the transgender community?
I began working on transgender individuals in Queens, NY in school back in 1995. Which by the way…I was using the traditional single needle thermolysis method. I was frustrated by the results, and the re-growth rate, and enrolled in an advanced Electrology program.
What kind of changes have you seen in the transgender community over the years?
The access to resources since the internet has been incredible! Patients can find support groups, medical professionals and get access to things that just weren’t available 25 years ago.
How would you describe the emotional transition that happens at the end of treatment for your clients?
I call it an emotional “transformation”, it’s pure joy… like an enormous emotional burden has been lifted. And sometimes the client is also emotional because they won’t see us anymore, the relationship sometimes ends as well, it’s bittersweet.
What keeps you motivated to want to continue working with the transgender population?
- Fulfillment; knowing that I’m making a difference, impacting another person’s life/lives in a positive way motivates me every day to do more, and give more.
- The stories, connecting with so many humans over 25 years, and it still makes me emotional to hear both good and sad.
