Trans Folks Rock the Vote

Hey, trans, queer, and allied folks—are we ready to ROCK THE VOTE this November? It’s time to make our voices heard loud and clear, especially as the election season approaches. Whether you’re voting for the first time or a seasoned pro, now is the time to get voter-ready and make sure your voice counts. Ready to get started? Let’s dive into this easy-to-follow checklist together. (Stay tuned to the end for voting tips as a trans person this election!)

Step 1: Check Your Voter Registration

Before you hit the polls, make sure you’re registered to vote! Head over to vote.gov and confirm your registration. Not registered yet? No worries! Register today and be sure to check your state’s registration deadlines. For our fellow Californians, you’ve got until October 21st to get it done!

💡 Pro Tip: Not sure where to start? Your state’s election site or CanIVote.org will have all the details you need for your specific location. Don’t let that deadline creep up on you—get it done today!

How to Cast Your Ballot This November

Step 2: Get Educated on Local & National Ballot Initiatives

Once you’re registered, it’s time to do some homework. Knowing what’s on the ballot is just as important as voting itself. Local and national initiatives can directly affect the LGBTQ+ community, so it’s crucial to stay informed. A great place to start is vote411.org, where you can find details on the issues and candidates in your area.

💡 Quick Tip: Take a few minutes to check out nonpartisan voter guides—they’ll give you the lowdown on what’s at stake without the political spin. Knowledge is power!

Step 3: Make Your Voting Plan

Election Day is Tuesday, November 5th, and you’ve got options. Whether you’re voting in person or mailing in your ballot, make sure you have a plan. Double-check your polling place if you’re voting in person, or if you’re voting by mail, be sure to send in your ballot well before Election Day. You don’t want to miss out!

💡 Fun Fact: Did you know that some states allow early voting? Check your local guidelines, and you might be able to avoid the long Election Day lines!

(Optional) Step 4: Get Active and Involved!

Feeling fired up? You can do more than just vote—get involved! Volunteering for grassroots organizations, joining community events, or writing to your representatives are powerful ways to amplify your impact. Every action counts, so don’t be afraid to take part in something bigger!

Challenges Faced by Trans Voters

Did you know? Approximately two million eligible LGBTQIA+ Americans are not registered to vote. We know that voting while trying to change your birth name or gender marker might be stressful, or even scary. It is estimated that over 825,000 transgender adults in the U.S. will be eligible to vote in the November 2024 general election. More than 200,000 trans folks who are eligible to vote don’t have an ID that correctly reflects their name or gender (Williams Law Institute).

If you need help getting on track to vote this year, don’t be afraid to reach out. There are several organizations here to support you—including the Transgender Law Center, the Trans Latin@ Coalition, and Advocates for Trans Equality. Additionally, you can head to https://www.voteriders.org/pride/ for the full scoop on voting as a trans or nonbinary person in your state.
